Used Truck Tailgates: A Buyer's Guide
The most frequently damaged panel on any pickup, and one of the easiest to replace.
The short answer
When buying a used tailgate, check the year range and models, whether it has the camera aperture, step and power lock provision your truck uses, the condition of the hinges, latches and torsion bar, and whether there is corrosion along the bottom edge, which is where tailgates rot first. Tailgates cross over between models more readily than any other panel, so a gate listed for a 2500 will very often fit a 3500 from the same generation. Confirm with a VIN before you buy.
Why tailgates get replaced so often
They are the panel most likely to be reversed into, loaded badly, stood on, or stolen. They are also the panel
where corrosion shows first, because water sits along the bottom seam.
What to check
The bottom edge
Look along the lower seam for bubbling or perforation. This is where a tailgate dies, and a photograph taken from straight on will hide it. Ask for a low angle shot.
Hinges and latches
They take the load every time the gate is opened. Worn latches rattle and eventually will not hold.
The torsion bar or damper
Modern gates use an assist mechanism. If it is missing or failed, the gate drops hard and is unpleasant to use.
Provision
Camera aperture, step, power lock and any handle-mounted electronics. These vary by trim, not by year.

Tailgates are the most interchangeable panel on a pickup. The bed opening is frequently shared between half ton
and heavy duty trucks of the same generation, and often across several model years. That widens your options
